On 12 July 2017, at approximately 22:35 local time (UTC +2), a very serious Marine accident occurred in the Pelješac Channel near Kučište. The accident involved a collision between a private vessel under the Croatian flag, marked “MT 1839,” and a private vessel under the Czech flag, marked “CZ 111 018.”
As a result of the collision, the operator of the vessel “CZ 111 018” sustained severe injuries and fell into the sea, where he tragically lost his life. The vessel he was operating subsequently veered off on its own, detached from the vessel it collided with, and began circling uncontrollably at high speed, occasionally changing direction and approaching the shore. After multiple attempts by rescue services, the vessel was eventually forcibly stopped and secured.
The collision caused visible damage to the bow’s above-water and underwater sections of vessel “CZ 111 018” and to the above-water left side of the hull near the bow of vessel “MT 1839.” No injuries or fatalities occurred among those on board vessel “MT 1839” or among third parties. No damage was inflicted on third parties. Since the vessels were not designed for cargo transport, no cargo was present, and no damage to cargo occurred. No marine or environmental pollution resulting from the collision was observed.
