Serious Aircraft Accident – SAAB 340A – Zagreb International Airport, May 8, 2023

Summary:

On May 8, 2023, around 19:15 LT (local time), after completing a flight from Sarajevo Airport (LQSA) and landing at Zagreb International Airport, the aircraft began to move uncontrollably during parking and collided with a passenger car and a van.

There were three people on board the aircraft, and one person in the vehicles, with no injuries reported.

The aircraft sustained damage to the nose landing gear door, taxi light, hydraulic pipe, and fiberglass cladding. The vehicles also sustained partial damage.

INVESTIGATION
The Air, Maritime and Railway Traffic Accident Investigation Agency received information about the accident from Zagreb International Airport and initiated a Safety Investigation. The investigation identified the causes of the accident.
The accident occurred due to the loss of hydraulic brake pressure, which was caused by the pilot’s decision to turn off the hydraulic pump.
AIN issued safety recommendations to the operator of the aircraft.

Based on the investigation, the Air, Maritime and Railway Traffic Accident Investigation Agency issues the following safety recommendations to Fleet Air International Kft., the owner and operator of the SAAB 340A, registration HA-TAD:

✓ AIN04-SR-01/2024

AIN recommends that Fleet Air International Kft., the owner and operator of the SAAB 340A (HA-TAD), include in the emergency checklist the text defining that in the case of the failure of the electric hydraulic pump, one of the pilots, using the manual hydraulic pump, should maintain the hydraulic system pressure within the limits of 2100 – 2900 psi.

✓ AIN04-SR-02/2024

AIN recommends that Fleet Air International Kft. include in the emergency checklist the text defining that in the event of failure of the electric hydraulic pump, the use of hydraulic accumulator pressure reserves should be rational, meaning all actions requiring the use of the aircraft’s hydraulic system should be performed only to the extent necessary (e.g., driving without unnecessary turns and multiple braking).
