Response Procedures in Case of a Marine Accident

In the event of an accident, it is essential to act promptly to prevent and limit further dangers to human lives, property, and the marine environment. Therefore, the following response measures are recommended:
Immediately request assistance from search and rescue services by calling the free emergency number 195, which connects to the National Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Rijeka).
Alternatively, assistance can be requested via coastal radio stations operated by Plovput on VHF Channel 16 or VHF DSC 70. Calls for help can also be made through the European emergency number 112, which will connect the caller to MRCC Rijeka.
Essential Information to Provide When Reporting an Accident:
Location of the marine accident
Type of incident (collision, grounding, fire, etc.)
Identification details of the vessel in distress (name, call sign)
Number of people onboard
Presence and severity of injuries
Additional Recommendations:
Follow the instructions given by search and rescue operators until help arrives.
In case of grounding, do not continue sailing without a professional assessment of the vessel’s damage and seaworthiness, as well as approval from the competent authorities
If abandoning ship, use personal lifesaving equipment.
